The Final Report of the National Health Service Centre for Reviews and Dissemination on Water Fluoridation, which was commissioned by the Department of Health, will be available on the following website on 6 October, 2000. Key words to watch for - "marginally beneficial".

The Government's White Paper on health specifically stated that this Review would examine the effects of FLUORIDE ON HEALTH. HOWEVER, the NHSCRD focussed only on "Water fluoridation" - and was HIGHLY SELECTIVE in the papers it accepted for review.

The Review SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDED all animal studies, all biochemical studies, all mathematical models, therefore ignoring decades of international scientific research which found serious adverse effects from fluoride exposure - including exposure to naturally fluoridated AND artificially fluoridated water.

One example - the Review EXCLUDED more than 100 scientific references submitted by Parents of Fluoride Poisoned Children on the adverse effects of fluoride on the THYROID GLAND. (See their correspondence with the Review on http://www.bruha.com/fluoride/index.htm).

The Review neither considered nor addressed the significant differences between, naturally-occurring Calcium fluoride and the industrial waste silicofluorides added to water in artificial fluoridation schemes - hexafluorosilicic acid, which contains KNOWN HUMAN CARCINOGENS in a toxic mix of Arsenic, Beryllium, Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Silicon and other major contaminants, including Radionuclides.

The Review did not consider DERMAL ABSORPTION, which accounts for 64% - 91% of exposure.

The Review has been SEVERELY CRITICISED by international scientists. (See some critiques of the Review sent to York by international scientists - http://www.fluoridealert.org).

The Government supports water fluoridation - on the recommendation of "government advisers" and others, who claim that water fluoridation is a "safe and effective public health measure."

The Department of Health FUNDS the British Fluoridation Society Ltd, now hidden within "The National Alliance for Equity in Dental Health" - which is largely comprised of dental groups and "authoritative bodies" - and includes MENCAP, Help the Aged, The Patients Association and The National Autistic Society. These organisations have conducted NO scientific research on artificial water fluoridation or on the effects of fluoride exposure from all sources - they are simply "endorsers" of artificial water fluoridation.

NO SAFETY TESTING DATA on the specific fluoridation agents exist - because no safety testing has EVER been conducted on the ACTUAL industrial waste "product" used in artificial water fluoridation schemes.

WHATEVER the NHSCRD Final Report may conclude, the National Pure Water Association asserts that it can NOT be an appropriate basis for ANY Government policy which supports artificial water fluoridation FOR TWO REASONS.

1. Because the fluoridating agent ITSELF has NEVER been safety tested for its fitness for human consumption, and the Review did not examine the effects of FLUORIDE ON HEALTH (as stated in the White Paper). ANY assertion from ANY quarter that artificial water fluoridation is "safe and effective" is FALSE. NO PROOF OF SAFETY HAS BEEN SOUGHT.

2. The NPWA ASSERTS that the artificial fluoride treatment of approximately 10% of the British population should be stopped immediately, notwithstanding the Precautionary Principle (which has also been ignored), for it DENIES THE RIGHT of every individual to TO REFUSE to be treated or medicated against his/her will. Whether public drinking water supplies should be fluoridated is neither a proper subject for debate, nor is it a proper subject for any collective vote by elected representatives or even by the general public at large. No person has the right to determine what another will put into his/her own body if that person strongly wishes not so do so. Therefore, because artificial water fluoridation DENIES the Rights of millions of individuals, it should be declared ILLEGAL.

The National Pure Water Associations CALLS UPON PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR and his Government TO LISTEN - AND TO ACT NOW to fulfil the Government's DUTY to protect the rights of the British people.

IF THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT recognise and ACT to protect those Rights, we will strengthen our call for a FULL, INDEPENDENT PUBLIC INQUIRY into water fluoridation AND the conduct of the York Review, which was funded from the British taxpayers' purse and, if a Public Inquiry is denied, we will take the matter to the EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS.

The Government's (initial) "Target List" for water fluoridation includes Western Scotland, North West England, Northern Ireland and Inner London. (Hansard).

WESTERN SCOTLAND. The Edinburgh Court of Session declared water fluoridation UNLAWFUL in 1983 - so the Tory government LEGALISED IT in 1985!! Last year's "massive" poll in the Glasgow Evening Times was 97% AGAINST water fluoridation. THIS YEAR, their poll registered 98% AGAINST water fluoridation - up another point!

THESE PEOPLE ARE PARENTS WHO REJECT WATER FLUORIDATION FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR CHILDREN.

NORTHERN IRELAND. 25 out of N. Ireland's 26 Councils rejected water fluoridation for the FOURTH TIME in 1996. These Councils formed NORTHERN IRELAND COUNCILS AGAINST WATER FLUORIDATION. The two small fluoridation plants in N. Ireland are closed. Communities from the two fluoridated areas - Holywood and Tandragee - MARCHED together to STORMONT - TWICE - to protest against water fluoridation. THE MAJORITY OF THESE PEOPLE ARE PARENTS WHO REJECT WATER FLUORIDATION FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR CHILDREN.

THE NORTH WEST OF ENGLAND. 28 out of 31 NW Councils rejected water fluoridation in the early 90s. These Councils formed NORTH WEST COUNCILS AGAINST WATER FLUORIDATION. Many MEDIA POLLS show LARGE MAJORITIES AGAINST FLUORIDATION. (The Leicester Mercury, in November 1994, polled c. 66,000 people. 93.4% were AGAINST water fluoridation. Thousands of these people were parents who rejected water fluoridation for themselves and their children.

INNER LONDON. At Mayor's Question Time, Ken Livingstone responded to Darren Johnson (Green Party) saying he opposes water fluoridation. The NHS Executive Draft Strategy for Health for London promotes water fluoridation. (Interestingly, this document was in existence BEFORE the elections for the GLA.).

The issue of water fluoridation has also been raised in the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. Both have indicated that they are awaiting the outcome of the York Review. More DEAF POLITICIANS?

In the early 1960s areas in the West Midlands and the North East were artificially fluoridated. Councils trusted the health authorities' claims and many councillors were persuaded that tooth decay is more important than the individual rights of constituents.

A large body of published scientific findings from around the world has provided evidence of the harmfulness of water fluoridation - but Government insists that "no such evidence has been found"! Well - all we can say to that is, "If your advisers don't look for evidence of harm, they won't find it!" Positions and reputations have been 'built' on water fluoridation (e.g. The British Fluoridation Society Ltd).

Today, the people - and their elected representatives - are much more aware of HUMAN RIGHTS. But, although regional populations and their Councils have repeatedly said "NO!" to water fluoridation, successive Governments have refused to take "No" for an answer.

The National Pure Water Association will continue the campaign which it has sustained for FORTY YEARS - supported by many other organisations, professionals from all disciplines and 'lay people' - UNTIL ALL LEGISLATION PERMITTING ARTIFICIAL WATER FLUORIDATION IS REPEALED.
